Canisy

Canisy is a commune with 1041 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It is capital of the canton Canisy.

Geography

Canisy is located in northern France on the Cotentin peninsula, 8 km south-west of Saint- Lô, the capital of the arrondissement. Neighboring communities of Canisy are Le Mesnil- Amey in the Northwest, Saint- Gilles in the north, Saint- Ébremond -de- Bonfossé the east and Quibou in the southwest. The municipality covers 625 hectares, the average height is 78 meters above sea level, the Mairie stands at a height of 62 meters. The Terrette, a tributary of the Taute and the Joigne flow through the municipality.

Canisy is a climate of type Cfb ( according to Köppen and Geiger ) assigned: Warm Temperate rain climate ( C ), fully wet ( f), the warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C ( b). There is a maritime climate with moderate summer.

History

During World War II Canisy was occupied by the German army, which used the Canisy castle as a base of operations. In August 1944 Canisy was liberated by the Operation Cobra, while maintaining the castle badly damaged.

Culture and sights

The Canisy castle was built in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries. It is surrounded by 30 hectares of park. The property is so large that it is partly located on the territory of the municipality of Saint -Gilles. The park was created in the first half of the 17th century, from 1830 newly furnished in English style, and later, from 1925, by the landscape architect Achille Duchêne ( 1866-1947 ) rebuilt in neoclassical style. Some notable outbuildings have been preserved, including the old stables, the Orangerie, the greenhouses and the adjoining vegetable garden. The stables of the Ferme de la Mesnagerie emerged in 1854, the barn of the Ferme de Saint -Gilles and the round vegetable garden built around 1850. The mill was built in 1815 by Saint- Gilles and the mill of Canisy also belonged to the estate. The castle is partly classified as a monument historique ( historic monument '), registered in part in the description list of Monuments historiques. It is privately owned.

In the Church of Saint- Pierre is painted and gilded limestone statue of the Virgin and Child from the 14th century. The statue was classified in 1974 as a historical monument.

Local products

The municipal area controlled designation of origin (AOC ) for Camembert de Normandie Pont- l'Évêque (cheese), Calvados, pommeau de Normandie and lamb ( Pres-sales du Mont -Saint -Michel ) apply. The lambs grazing on salty meadows at Baie du Mont -Saint -Michel. In addition, protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Pork ( Porc de Normandie), poultry ( Volailles de Normandie) and the names of Normandy cider or normand apply.

Personalities

  • Jean Follain (* 1903 in Canisy, † 1971 in Paris), writer. He received the Grand prix de littérature literary prize de l' Académie française 1970. 1942 he wrote a book about his birthplace.
