Çankırı (formerly Qankiri ) is a Turkish city in Anatolia and has 69 631 inhabitants ( 2010 census ). It is the provincial capital of the province of Çankırı. The license plate number of the city and the province begin with the number 18

History

The ancient name of the city was Gangra under the Romans it was called Germanicopolis. She was 340/41 the scene of the Synod of Gangra on the teachings of the Eustathians were convicted. In the 8th century it suffered from two Arab invasions and was then strongly fortified.

In the Ottoman Empire was the capital of a sanjak of Çankırı eyalet Anadolu, later Vilayet of Kastamonu.

During the genocide of the Armenians were from the April 24, 1915 Armenians, in particular intellectuals from Istanbul, deported to Çankırı and interned there.
