Canteleu

Canteleu is a French town with 14,790 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Seine- Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Communauté d' agglomération Rouen Elbeuf- Austreberthe. The inhabitants are called Cantilien (ne) s.

Geography

Canteleu is immediately adjacent to the northern French city of Rouen. Situated on the edge of the 4000 -hectare Forêt de Roumare ( forest of Roumare ). The Seine runs between Canteleu and the 2.3 kilometers southeast lying Le Petit- Quevilly. The Cailly, a tributary of the Seine, and the Clairette flow through the municipality. To Canteleu heard the location right by the Seine hamlet Croisset.

History

Canteleu was first mentioned in documents as Cantelupo in the 12th century. The city's name also extends to a portion of the forest of Roumare, it means chante loup, eg " place where the wolf howls ."

Thomas de Gades - Renicourt (1211-1274) was Seigneur of Montigny Canteleu and he succeeded Louis IX. of France (1214-1270) in 1249 on the crusade to Egypt in 1270 and on the Seventh Crusade, on which Louis IX. died.

During the Wars of Religion ( 1562-1598 ) Canteleu was devastated ( 1593/94 ).

Twinning

There are twinned with the northern German city of Buchholz in der Heide Nord (since September 1975), the Polish city Wolów ( since September 2005), the English town of New Milton and the City Kongoussi, which is located in Burkina Faso.

Culture and sights

Museums

The pavilion Flaubert is a museum that displays pens, drawings, and other objects that belonged to Gustave Flaubert ( 1821-1880 ). It stands in the hamlet Croisset. The father Flaubert had acquired the Pavilion 1844. Flaubert has lived for 35 years in the building and there wrote his works. Since 1906, the pavilion Flaubert serves as a museum.

Structures

Chateau des Lions castle was built around 1650. From 1810 to 1817, the castle was restored. It belongs to the city today. The chapel of the castle is practically destroyed, their windows are located at the Musée des antiquités in Rouen. The castle is registered since 1948 historiques in the supplementary list of Monuments (historical monuments ). The monastic buildings of the Penitents Sainte -Barbe ( Büßergemeinschaft Barbara of Nicomedia ) was the penitents 1472 donated by an inhabitant of the place. During the Wars of the monastery was destroyed and re-consecrated in 1605. From 1670 to 1700 the building was remodeled. A new church was consecrated in 1732. During the French Revolution the monastery was closed. In the 19th century, the monastery was converted into an orphanage, nursing home and boarding, so the buildings were extended to 1880. It is now privately owned and was founded in 1995 partially entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additive.

The Château du Panorama was built in 1856 as the residence of the family Prat De la Mossonnière and served until 1890 as a town hall. The obvious Place Gustave Prat offers a panoramic view of Rouen, the Seine valley and the highest European Hubbrücke Gustave Flaubert.

The parish church of Saint -Martin dates from the 13th century. The choir has been preserved. Nave and bell tower were built in the 16th century. In the 18th and 19th century the church was rebuilt. It now belongs to the city and is partially entered in the Register of Monuments historiques addition.

Economy

Major economic activities are the timber industry, floriculture, mushroom cultivation, cattle breeding, paper making and cotton spinning. There are also several quarries in Canteleu.
