Capistrano de Abreu

João Capistrano de Abreu ( born October 23, 1853 in Maranguape; † August 13, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian historian.

Capistrano de Abreu is considered one of the most important historians of Brazil and opponent of the Euro -centric Adolfo de Varnhagen Francisco. He devoted himself to the Brazilian colonial history and developed a national literary theory, which was based on the terms of the climate, the earthiness and race.

Capistrano de Abreu is patron of cadeira 15 of the Academia de Letras Cearense and 23 of the Academia Brasileira de cadeira Literatura de Cordel. He was elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras, but refused.
