History

From 798 until the end of the 16th century Cardona was considered one of the most important places for the social and historical development of Catalonia. Many factors such as the location of the fortress, salt deposits and the strategic road connections were critical to the city's history.

In written by Comte Borrell II Charter of April 23, 986 of the town's name is first mentioned in relation to the salt deposits in the municipality. The population at that time was not only the mining rights for la Vall Salina, the valley of salt, but Cardona received the market and city rights. Since salt had a great importance as a food preservative in the Middle Ages, up to the military protection of the territory and the salt mines were unusually undertaken and the fortress Castell de Cardona expanded.

In the 10th century, when the noble family de Folc Gardona established their residence in Castell de Cardona Castle, it had for the people not only financial but also political significance for the future generations of Cardona. As an influential member of the royal family of Spain and their dominance in Catalonia, with 30 villas, 21 castles, 272 lands and four seaports, the counts as jurisdiction over an area of 6 % in Catalonia were the driving forces behind the life of the castle and therefore of great importance for the further development of the salt City. The population grew significantly during this period.

The nobles were the merchants, artisans and clothiers of the town. This era lasted until the 16th century, when the family of the Compte settled in Barcelona and Arbeca and Seville. Cardona castle was the last stronghold of resistance against the occupation of Catalonia by the troops of the Castilian Felipe V in 1714.

Thereafter, the castle into barracks and the city lost its importance. There remained the simple artisan and agricultural areas, which were connected with the salt mining. During the 19th and 20th century, the social and economic activities of the city rose again. With the emergence of the industry from 1929 to 1991 ( textiles and the exploitation of potash mines ) Cardona gained new importance.
