Carit Etlar

Carit Etlar (pseudonym of Johan Carl Christian Brosbøll; born August 7, 1816 in Fredericia, † May 9, 1900 in Gentofte ) was a Danish writer.

Life

Etlar devoted himself initially painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but then went, orphaned and without fortune, to writing about and wrote for his maintenance, novels and plays.

After he had passed the exam of Arts in 1844, two years later he received the gold medal of the University of Copenhagen for answering an aesthetic Price task. Earlier he had attention due to its amendment Smuglerens Søn ( The son of the smuggler, German 1848) aroused, which was published under the (also subsequently retained ) poet name Carit Etlar. This pseudonym is an anagram of " Carl Tertia ", ie. By his first name and his first great love Tertia Fabricius Because of her early death Etlar could not marry, but closed 1851 - unfortunate - marriage with Hansine Thorbjørnsen. 1886 sparked Etlar to this marriage, to marry the 37 year younger Olga Augusta Schultz, who with 84 years stayed with him until his death.

The breakthrough as an author succeeded Etlar in the 1850s with his historical novels Gjöngehövdingen ( The chief of Gjöngen, 3rd edition 1854) and Dronningens Vagtmester ( The sergeant of the Queen ). The ability of historical color hand signals and strong realistic characteristic which he foreshadowed here he later developed significantly, such as in his Herverts Krönike (1863 ), Viben Peter (1875 ), Folk i Nöd ( The People in Need, 1878) and Solomon Baadsmand ( Salomon boatswain, 1880). With subtlety and sympathy he drew in Et Pleiebarn and Abraham, Isaac Jacob og pictures from the life of the offender in Jutland ( " Tater " is the historical Scandinavian term for the traveling people and Roma, see Resandefolket ). Less excellent Etlar was as dramatic poet ( Naar Solen gaar ned, Mr. liquor med the tunge Haand, Rörfuglen ), although it lacks his spectacles at no scenic effect. His travelogues Arabere above Kabylere (1868 ) and Hungary Gjennem og Transylvania (1871 ) are full of interesting scenery and picturesque situations.

Etlar was one of the most prolific Danish poet and was regarded as the legitimate successor of Walter Scott. His imagination was exceedingly rich and fertile and pronounced his sense of the Distinctive and characteristic. To produce his easy way, however, the development of his major talent was not always conducive. Etlar was also inspector of the Royal Library in Copenhagen. His writings ( Skrifter ) published in 24 volumes (Copenhagen 1859-68 ); a new collection ( Skrifter, ny Samling ) was published in five volumes (Copenhagen 1873-79 ).
