Gentofte Municipality

Gentofte Kommune [ gɛntɔfdə ] is a Danish municipality in the Capital Region.

The city is located about nine kilometers north of the capital, Copenhagen, and is the eighteenth largest municipality in the country. Covering an area of 25.60 km ² live 73 360 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Gentofte is part of the Capital Region Hovedstadsområdet.

The municipality consists of seven suburban dominated settlements that have developed around former villages and manors outside Copenhagen Charlottenlund, Dyssegård, Gentofte, Hellerup, Jægersborg, Klampenborg Ordrup, Skovshoved and Vangede. Council is based in Charlotte Lund.

The municipality comprises mainly exclusive residential areas for commuters to Copenhagen and further trade and service companies. The pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk is established after the closure of Tuborg Brewery as the last remaining industrial enterprises here.

Architecture

Major attractions include the Castle Charlottenlund, Bernstorff Castle and the Ordrupgaard Museum. Two racetracks are located in the municipality: Charlottenlund Travbane ( harness racing ) and racecourse Klampenborg ( horse racing ) ( partly in the Lyngby - Taarbæk municipality ).

In Klampenborg you will find the beach Bellevue and Bellevue Teater, both designed in the style of functionalism by Arne Jacobsen. Another work of the famous Danish architect is the gas station Skovshoved.
