Carl Ferdinand Becker

Carl Ferdinand Becker ( born July 17, 1804 in Leipzig, † October 26, 1877 in Plagwitz in Leipzig ) was a German organist and writer on music.

Life

Becker was born in 1804 as the son of a physician and writer in Leipzig. As a student he attended the Thomas School in Leipzig. His teacher Johann Gottfried layer (1753-1823) and Friedrich Schneider (1786-1853) trained him as a musician. From 1820 to 1833 he was a violinist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra. In 1825 he became organist at St. Peter's Church and St. Nicholas Church 1837. In 1848 he became a teacher for organ and music history at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig. In 1834 he joined the staff at the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, and was one of the founders of the Leipzig Bach Society in 1850. He died in 1877 near Leipzig.
