Carl Ludvig Engel

Johann Carl Ludwig Engel ( born July 3, 1778 in Berlin, † May 14, 1840 in Helsinki ) was a German - Finnish architect and painter. He was a fellow student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Life

Carl Ludwig Engel was born the son of a Berlin Wall Master and studied from 1800-1804 Architecture at the local Academy of Architecture. Because of the French occupation out of work, he entered the Russian service, and went in 1809 as a city - builder to Reval and then as head of the new committee to the then Russian Helsinki. In 1824 he became general manager of construction for the Grand Duchy of Finland.

Angel was next to Alvar Aalto 's most important architect in Finland. He built inter alia, in Helsinki the Senate and the University Classicist rigor, but also shaped the face of other Finnish cities prevail. Many of his designs have been implemented or completed until after his death.
