Carl Riedel

Carl Riedel (also: Charles, born October 6, 1827 in Cronenberg, † June 3, 1888 in Leipzig ) was a German conductor and composer.

Life and work

Riedel was originally silk dyer. Karl Wilhelm discovered his musical talent in the Krefeld Liedertafel and promoted him. 1849-1852 studied at the Conservatory in Leipzig Riedel, now the University of Music and Theatre " Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy " Leipzig. Then he stayed here as a teacher of piano playing and theory.

His contemporaries saw his chief merit in the establishment (1854 ) and management of the after named him Choral Society of Sacred Music ( Riedel- Verein), the pioneering achievements accomplished in his regular performances not only by works of Johann Sebastian Bach ( B Minor Mass 1859) Georg Friedrich Handel and Ludwig van Beethoven ( Missa Solemnis 1860), but also the church Tonwerke vorbach between time and the former presence brought to the performance and subsequently gained a certain notoriety. 1859, the choir sang the world premiere of Graner Festmesse by Franz Liszt, 1872 at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus under Richard Wagner's leadership, the 9th Symphony by Beethoven.

For the literature of choral singing Riedel has created works that were lasting significance, such as by publishing his Bergische Christmas legends. But even his rather idiosyncratic processing of passion music of Heinrich Schütz, which anticipated the contactor Renaissance, the publication of Christmas Carols by Michael Praetorius (The shepherds sorely glorified, Es ist ein Ros sprung ), the old Bohemian Hussitenlieder and Eccardschen Prussian hard songs were of importance. Until today, a lot of singing from the old Bohemian songs carols Come, ye shepherds, which can be found as in some diocesan Appendices to the praise of God in both the Protestant hymnal (EC 48), and Joy to the earth and stars.

Riedel was a co-founder of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein and übermahm 1869 the Bureau of Franz Brendel. In 1871 he became chairman of the Leipzig Wagner Society.

At his birthplace Huetter Road No. 4, a memorial plaque was placed.
