Carl Wigand Maximilian Jacobi

Carl Wigand Maximilian Jacobi ( born April 10, 1775 in Dusseldorf, † May 18 1858 in Siegburg ) was Secret and Obermedizinalrat and head of the provincial hospital in Siegburg. He is considered the founder of modern medicine astray.

Life

Jacobi was a son of the philosopher Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi. On 16 May 1798 he married Anna Frederike Petrina Claudius ( 1777-1856 ), a daughter of the poet Mathias Claudius. Her granddaughter Clarissa Voigt ( born October 4, 1833 † March 10, 1894 ) was married in 1855 to the later known psychiatrist Bernard of Gudden, who was his assistant physician in Siegburg 1848-1851. Study

Jacobi studied from 1793 to 1795 in Jena and Göttingen. After a brief internship in Edinburgh he completed his PhD on February 21, 1797 at the University of Erfurt to the doctor of medicine.

Work

Jacobi worked in 1799 in Vaals, then in Eutin, from 1803 to 1804 in London, from 1805 to 1811 in Munich. In Salzburg he worked from 1812 to 1815 as a senior physician. In Dusseldorf he then worked as a government medical officer and from 1816 to 1824.

On January 1, 1825, he became head of the newly established provincial hospital. It was the first lunatic asylum in the Rhineland.
