Carlos Banteux

Carlos Banteur Suárez ( born October 13, 1986 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer. He won a silver medal in the welterweight division at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Career

Carlos Banteur began as a teenager in his native city of Santiago de Cuba, the city where he still lives, with the boxes. He quickly developed into an outstanding boxer and in 2004 was Cuban junior champion. He started this year already with the Cuban Championship of seniors, and came in the light welterweight behind Estenio Gutiérrez and Yudel Johnson on a very good 3rd place. At a size of 1.85 meters, it brings with excellent physical conditions, in terms of its reach. He boxed well in light welterweight ( class up to 64 kg body weight ) before 2007, he moved in the welterweight division ( class to 69 kg body weight).

His start in international championships he gave in 2004 at the Junior World Championships in South Korea Jeju -si. With three early wins and a points victory he was in Jeju in superior style junior world champion in the light welterweight division.

In the Cuban Championship 2005 Carlos Banteur lost the quarter-final against defending champion Estenio Gutierrez on points and therefore landed on the 5th Place. In the same year he also boxed for the first time in Germany. When Chemistry Cup in Halle ( Saale), he defeated it in the light welterweight Robby Siebert from Germany on points and Martin Swoboda from the Czech Republic by demolition in the 3rd round and came with a bloodless victory over Dilshod Mahmudow, Uzbekistan to win the tournament in the light welterweight. When " Giraldo Córdova Cardín " Memorial in Havana, the largest Cuban tournament at international level, he came up with victories over William Mena, Dominican Republic and Azimkhan Beisenbajew from Kazakhstan to the final, where he his compatriot Inocente Fiss on points ( 4:7 ) subject. He was then in October 2005 at the AIBA World Cup in Moscow, a tournament that was held in the form of country struggles to use but had to pay dearly, because he lost against both Kunat Orakgajew from Kazakhstan ( 36:44 ) as against Oleg Komissarow from Russia ( 25:30 ) respectively on points.

In the Cuban Cup 2006 Carlos Banteur reached the final, where he lost to Inocente Fiss, however just by points ( 23:24 ) and had to be content with the runner-up title. In the so-called third Cuban Olympiad, an international tournament in Havana, he achieved three wins in the finals where he lost to Yudel Johnson, Cuba, on points. Qualifying for the World Championships in Mianyang / China it was not yet possible.

In 2007, Carlos Banteur lost to the Cuban Championship Welterweight already in the second round against Andres Aldana, because he had to retire because of an injury and ended up with it on the 9th Place. He drew his own conclusions and moved to the next higher weight class, the welterweight division. He came in this weight class but at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro is not used. Once at this championship several boxers left the Cuban team and nachsuchten for political asylum in the United States and in Germany, Cuba did not participate in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago, because there " the security of the Cuban team was not guaranteed". In reality, we had probably afraid that other boxers would not return from the trip abroad.

Through this non-participation, the Cuban boxers for the Olympic Games in Beijing had to qualify first. After the best Cuban welterweight boxer, Erislandi Lara was excluded from active competition after his aborted escape attempt from Rio de Janeiro by the Cuban Association for life, was Carlos Banteur in Cuba the No. 1 welterweight. He won in March 2008 in Port of Spain / Trinidad at the 1st American qualifying tournament for Beijing with four wins the competition in the welterweight and fought his way to make the right start in the Olympics. He then won three high-profile international events in Kiev, Valencia / Venezuela and Havana. In the Strandja Tournament in Plovdiv / Bulgaria was defeated, however, in his first fight against Englishman Billy Joe Saunders on points. He then won even at the Pan American Championships 2008 in Cuenca / Ecuador welterweight. In the final of that tournament he defeated John Jackson of the Virgin Islands convincingly on points.

After an intensive preparation for the Olympic Games in Ecuador Carlos Banteur arrived in Beijing to point victories over Billy Joe Saunders, he sure this time with 13:6 hits dominated, Hosam Abdin from Egypt ( 10:2 ) and Hanati Silamu from China ( 17: 4) and was thus in the final battle for the gold medal against the Kazakhs Baqit Sarsekbajew. Sarsekbajew dictated this fight and let Carlos Banteur no chance of victory ( 9:18 ). Carlos Banteur so did not make it, like no other of his squadron mates to win a gold medal in boxing in Beijing.

At the end of 2008, but he then won the World Cup in Moscow in December, the competition in the welterweight division. In the semifinals, where he won against Jack Culcay - Keth of Germany and in the final against Dilshod Mahmudow from Uzbekistan respectively with 15:4 hits on points.

In the AIBA World Championships in Milan in September 2009 set as tournament favorite Banteur retired unexpectedly already in his second fight against Canadian Mikael Zewski from ( 2:5 ), after he had previously clearly prevailed over the Americans Errol Spence (11: 1).

2010 Banteur took part in the Pan American Championships and won after a final defeat by Myke Carvalho, Brazil ( 9:6 ), the silver medal. At the World Championships the following year he retired in the preliminary round against Taras Shelestyuk, Ukraine ( 17:15) from, but he was able to win the Pan American Games in the same year.

In 2012 Banteur was due to unspecified " indiscipline " punished with a competition suspension, due to which he was just as Emilio Correa not included in the Cuban Olympic team at the Summer Olympics in London. After the lapse of more than half of the imposed deadline the lock has been lifted at the end of the year. Since his return in December 2012 to the Cuban Championships Banteur occurs in the 75 - kg class. At his debut at middleweight, he reached the final, which he lost 15:23 against Yasiel Despaigne of Pinar del Río. In 2013 he was allowed to travel with the national team to competitions abroad.
