Carlos de Amésquita

Carlos de Amésquita ( Carlos de Amézola ) was a Spanish naval officer of the 16th century.

On August 2, 1595 during the Spanish- English war (1585 ) succeeded in four Spanish galleons - the " Capitana ", " Patrona ", " Peregrina ", and " Bazana " - to land in Cornwall. Actually, they were part of the Breton Coast Guard, but they came to Mount 's Bay in Cornwall. Commander De Amésquita and several hundred marines, pillaging the village of Mousehole and went back on board to two miles a fort at Penzance to burn. The local militia had fled at the sight of the Spaniards. After a fair they sailed back to France, although the now alerted English fleet under Francis Drake and John Hawkins tried to intercept.

The attack of the flotilla of De Amésquita was one of the few successful Spanish attacks on English soil. But not the first, a unit of Fernando Sánchez de Tovar was 100 years previously successful.
