Carlos Galvão de Melo

Carlos Galvão de Melo ( * August 4, 1921 in Buarcos, Figueira da Foz, † 20 March, 2008 Alcabideche ) was a Portuguese officer of the Carnation Revolution.

The oldest of nine children of António Augusto Ferreira de Melo and his wife Cecilia Rosa de Noronha Galvão Teles became a member of the Junta de Salvação Nacional after the coup of 25 April 1974 which swept the regime of the Estado Novo and democracy to Portugal brought. Soon Galvão de Melo became known as one of the most conservative, if not reactionary members of the junta.

Classified as far to the right upright politician, he was a candidate in the presidential elections in 1980 in Portugal, but received only a small share of the vote.

In the 1990s he was at the center of controversy because of his support of the annexation of East Timor by Indonesia.

The twice married, leaving six children from his first marriage.
