Carlos Gamarra

Carlos Alberto Gamarra Pavón ( born February 17, 1971 in Capiata ) is a former Paraguayan football player and most capped player in his country.

Club career

The defender played until 1995 at Cerro Porteño, only 1992, he laced his boots for the Argentine club Independiente. In 1995, he joined the Brazilian club Internacional and played there for two years. In 1997 he moved to Portuguese club Benfica, but only a year later, he returned to Brazil to Corinthians. In 1999 he tried his luck again in Europe and moved to Atlético Madrid.

From 2000 to 2001 he again returned to Brazil and joined Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. His third attempt in Europe started Gamarra 2001 with his move to AEK Athens. Finally, a year later he moved to Italian club Inter Milan, before returning to Brazil moved to Palmeiras Sao Paulo 2005. In the season 2005/ 06 he was elected in the jersey Palmeiras São Paulo in the Brazilian league at the best defensive player. In January 2007 he moved to his home to Club Olimpia where he played one year and then announced end of his career.

National

On March 3, 1993 Carlos Gamarra played his first game for Paraguay (Paraguay - Bolivia 1-0) and had since become the most important performers of the team. In total he played 110 matches and is thus most capped player of his country and one of the few South African players who have played more than 100 matches. He also scored 12 international goals. He stood at the World Championships in 1998 and 2002 in all games of his country on the field and completed this without committing a single foul. In the 1998 World Cup, he was chosen by FIFA in the all-star team of the tournament. He also belonged to the squad for the 2006 World Cup., Where he led his team as a captain on the field and made the first game against England after only three minutes through an own goal for the final score of 0:1. With the early departure of Paraguay at the 2006 World Cup, he also ended his international career.

In the 2004 Olympics he led the Paraguayan selection also as captain and won with his team the silver medal behind Argentina ( gold) and ahead of Italy (bronze). He was one of three players in the Paraguayan Olympic team who were allowed to exceed the age limit of 23 years.
