Carlos Kalmar

Carlos Kalmar ( born February 26, 1958 in Montevideo) is an Austrian- Uruguayan conductor. Kalmar is the music director of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago.

Kalmar began playing the violin at the age of six. After moving his family from Uruguay to Austria, he was received with 15 years on the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he studied conducting with Karl Austrians. In 1984 he was first in Hans Swarovsky competition for conductors.

Since then he has had numerous engagements in European countries and overseas. He was also from 1987 to 1992 chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 1995, the Stuttgart Philharmonic chief conductor and musical director, from 1996 to 2000 chief conductor and music director at the Anhalt Theatre Dessau Anhalt Philharmonic Dessau as well as artistic director and chief conductor of the Lower Austrian Tonkünstlerorchester.
