Life

Carlos Thays was born when Charles Thays in 1849 in Paris. He received his education at the French landscape architect Édouard François André. Thays in 1889 traveled to Argentina to create the Parque Sarmiento, Cordoba. During this time, Thays fell so much in the country that he decided to stay there. He worked mainly in Buenos Aires, where he was Director de Parques y 1891 Paseos ( director of parks and walking trails ) appointed. Through this position he had much influence on the design of the open spaces of the city and his legacy is still in the image of the city noticeable.

One of his larger projects, the planting of streets with trees, the redesign of public spaces and paths as well as the new plant and expansion among existing parks. In the city of Buenos Aires including the parks Centenario, Lezama, Patricios and Barrancas de Belgrano and the plazas ( squares ) Constitución, Congreso, General San Martín and de Mayo. Thays French origin is reflected in many of his designs, also a reason that many of the parks and squares in Buenos Aires are compared with similar systems in Paris.

In 1896 he designed the Parque San Martin. Among his greatest works in area of the 25 -acre Parque Tres de Febrero, also known as Bosques de Palermo belongs known. It is located in the Palermo district, and is also famous for its rose garden ( El Rosedal ).

Another project dear to his heart, was the Botanical Garden of Buenos Aires. He reached that the city administration for ready set eight acres of land, which he divided into different sections to represent the flora of each continent. This included a great area for native plants from Argentina that were ignored in garden design at that time. He has long researched the germination of Yerba Mate seeds and therefore is regarded as the inventor of the industrially grown yerba mate in Argentina. 1898, the garden has been completed and now bears the name Jardin Botanico Carlos Thays de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. One of the greenhouses is from the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. It was disassembled for transport and set up in Buenos Aires again. The herbarium, which was built in the English Regency style, Thays served as a residence during the creation of the park.

Thays creative period in Buenos Aires coincided with immigration -related high population growth in the city. It is now recognized that the city would look different, Thays would not have had such high demands on his designs and passed simultaneously to the numerous open spaces.

Although Thays predominantly worked in Buenos Aires, he can also realize projects in other parts of Argentina.
