Carlos Varela

Carlos Varela ( born April 11, 1963 in Havana, Cuba) is a singer and songwriter of Cuban music to La nueva trova Cubana.

One of Varela's songs, Una Palabra ( " a word " ), was used in 2001 in the short film Powder Keg as well as in the 2004 film Man on Fire ( Man on Fire). He had joined the Nueva Trova 1980 movement. Silvio Rodriguez, a founder of the Nueva Trova, discovered him and took him on a tour to Spain. His first album, Jalisco Park has also been published in Spain. Varela's music in the new millennium is known for its open criticism of aspects of the politics of Fidel Castro.
