Carmi is a small town and county seat of White County in the southeast of the U.S. state of Illinois on Little Wabash River. In 2000, Carmi had 5,422 inhabitants.

Geography

Carmi is located at 38 ° 05'18 " north latitude and 88 ° 10'05 " west longitude. The city covers 6.4 square kilometers, spread over 6.1 km ² land and 0.1 km ² water surface.

Carmi is located 14.6 kilometers from the border to Indiana either side of the Little Wabash River, a tributary of the Ohio River tributary Wabash.

In the Carmi Illinois State Route 1 and State Route 14 Illinois come together, the cross in the east of the city together on a bridge over the Little Wabash River. 21.2 km north east of Carmi extends Interstate 64, the shortest route from Louisville, Kentucky to St. Louis in Missouri.

History

Between 1809 and 1814, the first white settlers arrived in the area and founded the village, whose name is derived from the biblical figure of Joseph's nephew. The oldest building of Carni, which is now a museum, was built in 1814 and served in 1815 as a foundation of the White County Courthouse.

In Carmi Everton Conger lived, as an officer of the arrest of the murderer of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth undertook.
