Carnus hemapterus

  • Falkenlausfliege ( Carnus hemapterus )
  • Meoneura lamellata

The feathers fly ( Carnidae ) are a family of two-winged flies (Diptera ). Here they are counted among the flies. They are very small and reach body lengths of one to two millimeters.

Occurrence

You can find these feathers fly partly on flowers, sometimes on decaying substances. The larvae develop in organic wastes of all kinds To live as the representatives of the largest genus of the feathers fly Meoneura mainly on manure and feces of all kinds, Aas ( Nekrophagie ) and decaying plant parts ( compost). Some of them are also found in birds' nests, such as Meoneura lamellata.

Way of life

The Falkenlausfliege ( Carnus hemapterus ) is a blood-sucking parasite of birds, which can be found especially in nestlings of cavity nesting birds. The imago emerges in this kind of winged the doll, but the wing raises similar from how many louse flies ( Hippoboscidae ) on reaching a suitable host and adheres thereafter, especially under the wings or in the nest of the hosts on. After the loss of the wings and the flight muscles is reduced. In the females the abdomen during egg development swells up, the eggs are laid in the nest material. The larvae feed on the organic material here in the litter. The pupae overwinter.

System

Worldwide, about 70 members of this group are known in Central Europe, of which 15 species to find, live in Germany only seven. In Europe, the family of the feathers fly is represented by three genera and 39 species.
