Carteia

Carteia was a Roman town in Hispania; its ruins lie on the territory of the municipality of San Roque, about 13 kilometers northeast of Algeciras ( Portus Albo ) near the mouth of Guadarranque.

History

During the Second Punic War, the Romans struck in the year 206 BC at Carteia the fleet of the Carthaginians. In the year 171 BC Carteia was the first place outside Italy Colonia Latina libertorum. The city that always faithfully acted to Rome, owed ​​its commercial peak the fish processing plants and the purple worm fishing.

Excavations

First excavations began in the 1960s, these were continued until the 1990s. The excavation site is protected as a cultural monument since 1969 ( Bien de Interès Cultural ) and can be visited.
