Casimir II of Kuyavia

Casimir of Gniewkowo (Polish Kazimierz III Gniewkowski; * 1280, † after 1347 ) was from 1306 vassal of the crown of Poland, 1306-1309 governor in the Duchy of Pomerania, based in Tczew and when Casimir III. in the years 1314-1332 and 1343-1347 Duke of Cujavia in Gniewkowo. He was a nephew of the Polish king Władysław I the Elbow- and how that from the noble Kujawy Piast.

Life

Kazimir was the youngest son of Duke Siemomysław of Cujavia in Inowrocław and Salomea of Pomerania, daughter of Duke Sambor of Pomerania in Tczew and Mathilde von Mecklenburg.

He was first under the guardianship of his mother Salomea and took off in 1302 formally true, the first state business. He actively supported the unification policy of his uncle Władysław I the Elbow- whose vassal he was from 1306. In recognition of his loyalty he was given the governorship of the Duchy of Pomerania, but he lost to the Teutonic Knights due to the annexation of 1309. The Grand Master Siegfried von Feuchtwangen refused him, despite repeated requests, the return of the duchy. He was from 1309, together with his older brother Przemysław in a dispute with Bishop Gerward of Wloclawek, which ended only in 1311 with an agreement. Due to an inheritance after the death of his mother Salomea, he was given dominion over Gniewkowo whose duke he was 1314. As a loyal vassal and ally of the Polish king, finds his name a mention in a document from 1325 in which Poland an alliance with the dukes of Pomerania concluded.

In a war of the Teutonic Order against Poland his duchy became the focus of the action, which he completely lost to the German knights in 1332. It is not known what Duke Casimir undertook in the years following the loss of his duchy or where he was. His name appeared only in 1339, during the trials against the German knights in Warsaw and in 1343 in the peace treaty of Kalisz on, which eventually allowed him to return to his home Kuyavian.

Duke Casimir died after 1347th The exact date of death, and his burial place is unknown. In the Office of the Duke of Cujavia in Gniewkowo his son Władysław followed after.

Kasimir was married to a woman of unknown name and had several children two of which are mentioned by name in the sources with her:

  • Elisabeth (about 1315-1353/73 ), married to Stjepan II Kotromanić out of the house Kotromanić, Ban of Bosnia, Mother of the Hungarian Queen Elizabeth of Bosnia, grandmother of St. Jadwiga of Anjou;
  • Władysław (ca. 1327-1388 ), Duke of Cujavia in Gniewkowo, pretender to the crown of the Kingdom of Poland;
