Caspar Erasmus Duftschmid

Caspar Erasmus Duftschmid ( born November 19, 1767 in Gmunden, Upper Austria, † December 17, 1821 in Linz ) was an Austrian physician and naturalist ( botany and entomology ).

Duftschmid made significant discoveries in the field of entomology, especially the Koleopterologie ( coleopterology ), and acquired the complete insect collection by Johann Ignaz Schiffermueller for the Vienna Natural History Museum. His herbarium is located in the Upper Austrian Landesmuseum Linz. The entomological collection was well after a few detours to the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum. In later times, the old Originalbezettelung was destroyed, so that the Duftschmid'schen types are nowhere to be found today in the Musealverein collection.

In his three -volume work fauna AUSTRIAE he introduced many new genera and species.

Duftschmid was the father of the botanist and physician Johann Baptiste Duftschmid ( 1804-1866 ). He is the ancestor of the musician Lorenz Duftschmid (* 1964).
