Cassian of Imola

Kassian (? * In Rome (); † August 13 303 or 304 ( according to other sources: 363) in forum Cornelii ( Imola ), also Cassian Cassian of Imola ) was a Christian martyr and saint.

Kassian was according to tradition the poet Prudentius a martyr of the 4th century, probably of Diocletian's persecution of Christians. According to legend, Kassian said to have been Bishop of Saeben or Brescia, but this is not historically verifiable.

He was schoolmaster of the northern Italian town of Imola and refused to worship the Roman gods in the classroom. However, since he taught Christianity, he was sentenced to death. The sentence was executed by his angry students ( he has often physically punished ), which stabbed him with a pen of iron ( see figure).

With an opening of his tomb in Imola in 2004 traces were found on his skull, which have been associated with the martyrdom of the saint's legend, which was regarded as proof of the identity Kassians.

Special worship is Cassiano in Tirol given. He is one of the diocesan cartridge of the Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone. In Brixen he is one of the patrons of the Brixen Cathedral. For more churches dedicated to him see Kassianskirche.

Kassian is also the patron saint of the city of Imola and Mexico City as well as the patron saint of teachers and stenographers.

His feast day in the calendar of saints is his death, August 13.
