Cathedral of Arapgir

The Holy Mother of God Cathedral (Armenian Սուրբ Աստվածածին վանք or Արաբկիրի մայր եկեղեցի, Turkish Arapkir Ana Kilisesi ) was an Armenian Apostolic Cathedral from the 13th century in Arapgir in 1957 destroyed. The ruin is located in the district Bağcı in the province of Malatya.

The Cathedral of Arapgir was built in 1249. As one of the largest churches in Western Armenia, they could accommodate more than 3,000 people. It was looted and burned during the genocide of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, then rebuilt and used as a school.

1950 decided the Commune of Arapgir the demolition of the cathedral. On September 18, 1957, the cathedral was blown up.
