Causeway Bay

Causeway Bay or Wan Tung Lo (Chinese铜锣湾) is a district of Hong Kong on the north side of Hong Kong Iceland which is known for its shopping. Compared to the average shop rents is Causeway Bay to the Fifth Avenue in New York, the second most expensive shopping mall in the world.

The district extends from Route 1 in the west to about the Tin Hau Temple Road in the east. The limits are set but not officially; administrative law Causeway Bay belongs mainly to the Wan Chai District. Kellett Iceland, Victoria Park, and Tin Hau belong to the Eastern District.

Name

The name of Causeway Bay derives from a dam from (English causeway ), which was heaped in the former bay. The name Tung Lo Wan is a transliteration of the Chinese name铜锣湾, which literally means copper Gong Bay. The Tung Lo Wan Road testifies to the use of transcription. The Hong Kong-based Anglist Michael Ingham cites as more place names Hung Heung Lo and Lin Fa Kung. The former refers to the nearby summit Hung Heung Lo Fung (Chinese红 香炉峰) and literally means Red Räucherwerkbrennergipfel, the latter refers to the same temple (Chinese莲花 宫) Lin Fa Kung Street on the means and Lotus Temple.

Geography

A lot of the built-up area of present-day Causeway Bay was created by land reclamation in the former, muddy bay. The bay was located between the headland to the west and East Point North Point in the east. The original coastline can be guessed from the course of Tung Lo Wan Road. In 1884, the bay was reduced by reclaiming a 9 hectare area. Located on the site of the eponymous, heaped dam today's Causeway Road. In the 1950s a large land area was filled in, on the Victoria Park was created. The island Kellett Iceland, just north of East Point, was first connected by a causeway to Hong Kong Iceland. The construction of the Cross - Harbour Tunnel opened in 1972 Kellett Iceland was integrated into the coastline and is no longer an island. The original bay has gone through land reclamation measures. Is now located on the coast of Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, a locking mechanism for the protection of boats before typhoons. For the construction of the bypass Central -Wan Chai Bypass, a part of the Typhoon Shelters should be temporarily drained to build an underwater tunnel.

The Iceland Line of the Mass Transit Railway stops at the subway station in Causeway Bay and Tin Hau. The Cross- Harbour Tunnel connects Causeway Bay and Hung Hom in Kowloon.
