Kellett Island

Kellett Iceland (Chinese奇 力 岛) is a former island in Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. Since the construction of the Cross - Harbour Tunnel Kellett Iceland is integrated into the coastline of Hong Kong Iceland.

In Kellett Iceland are the home of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the southern entrance to the Cross - Harbour Tunnel, which forms part of the Route 1 highway.

History

After the British takeover of Hong Kong Iceland also a nearby island was claimed, which was located just north of East Point in Victoria Harbour. The island was named after the naval officer Henry Kellett Kellett as Iceland. 1841 a military fortification of the Royal Navy was built, which was extended in 1854 to three coastal guns. After 1860 Kowloon fell to the British sank the strategic importance and the weir was used mainly as storage for ammunition and gunpowder.

In 1938 the plant was handed over to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, which built a new clubhouse on the island. The new building was opened in 1940 and replaced the former Clubhouse in North Point, which no longer was after Landaufschüttung right on Victoria Harbour. 1951 to 1952, a dam between Kellett Iceland and Causeway Bay was built, so that the island could be reached by land now. For the construction of the Cross - Harbour Tunnel 1969-1972 Kellett Iceland was integrated by land reclamation in the coastline of Hong Kong Iceland. The tunnel entrance is located south and east of the former island. The newly reclaimed land from the yacht club is also additional floor space available, which is used among other things as a dry berth.

On the new piece of land between the tunnel entrance and Causeway Bay was 1982, the Police Officers ' Club opened a recreation facility for club members.

1991 was discovered on Kellett Iceland near the yacht club house a buried ceramic urn with copper coins which were dated to the Sui, Tang and Song Dynasty ( 581-1279 ). The Yacht Club handed over the fund to the Hong Kong Board of Antiquities and Monuments ( Antiquities and Monuments Office ).
