Cecilia Lindqvist

Anna Cecilia Lindqvist ( born June 4, 1932 in Lund as Anna Cecilia Norman; Chinese pseudonym Lin Xili林西莉, Lín Xili ) is a Swedish sinologist, writer and photographer.

Life

Lindqvist was a pupil of the eminent sinologist Bernhard Karlgren who applied first the methods of European historical linguistics to the Chinese. She studied Chinese language, history and art history as well as the musical instrument guqin.

From 1956 to 1986 she was married to the Swedish writer Sven Lindqvist, as the cultural attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Beijing was active from 1960 to 1961.

After her return from China she went with her husband to Latin America, where she worked as a journalist. In 1970, she returned to Sweden and from 1971 to Cecilia Lindqvist taught at high schools in Stockholm. As some students they asked to be allowed to learn Chinese, they took the then Swedish Minister of Culture Ingvar Carlsson a permission and taught 21 students for two years in Chinese. Then she ran it with the Trans-Siberian Railway to Beijing. Almost all of these students are now working in China.

From 1974 to 1989 Cecilia Lindqvist wrote in her book Hanzi Wangguo or the Kingdom of Characters, which in German under the title A world of signs appeared (Chinese汉字 王国, Pinyin Hànzì Wangguo ).

In 1994, she began her book about the Chinese musical instrument Qin (Chinese古琴, Pinyin gǔqín ), for which she took 13 years.

After completing her Master of Arts Lindqvist was in 1989 Professor of Sinology, until they retired in 1997. In 2003 she was a visiting professor at the University of Language and Culture Beijing ( Beijing Language and Culture University BLCU; Chinese北京 语言 大学, Pinyin Běijīng yǔyán Daxue ) was appointed.
