Building

The imposing building located on the " Strelka " said eastern tip of Vasilievsky Island, where the Neva river bifurcates into the Great Neva Small and Neva. The temple-like structure was built 1805-1810 and housed the St. Petersburg Stock Exchange. Since 1940, it is used as Seekriegsmuseum.

Future

In 2007 it was decided that future commodity exchange to be accommodated in the historic building. Since then, a new location for the Navy Museum is searched. A new museum building was to be built on the lower reaches of the river - Smolenka the Gulf of Finland, the plan was discarded. Instead, the nearly empty Kryukov barracks across the island of New Holland is to be converted, in the once sailors of the Navy were housed. The built 1844-1852 brick applies so well suited for museum purposes, as the exhibition area of 31,000 m² would be almost four times as large as at the Strelka. The end of 2009 the restoration work should be completed there. However, the Department of Defense lacks the money for the settlement. According to estimates, ( including ships in original size ) are only for packaging and transportation of the exhibits about one billion rubles (23 million euros ) is required.

Since 2011 the museum has been opened at the new location.
