Centrifuge Accommodations Module

The Centrifuge Accommodations Module (CAM, German Centrifuge Accommodation Module ) was a planned module of the International Space Station and should provide controlled gravity for experiments and allow for:

  • Subjecting of biological samples to artificial gravitational forces between 0.01 and 2 g
  • At the same time to produce two different artificial gravity level
  • Part - and hyper- gravity environments for samples to generate deforming effects and the limits of gravity to explore
  • Providing of temporary part - or hyper gravity environments for the effects of short gravity changes on samples to explore
  • For the effects of weightlessness to isolate simulation of Erdverhältnissen on board the ISS to samples
  • To allow simulation of Erdverhältnissen to sample a relaxation of microgravity
  • Enabling local 1 g of sample in zero gravity

The CAM should be related to the Space Shuttle around the year 2009/2010 to the ISS and there docked to the Harmony module. The module would have part of the U.S. segment of the station, but was built by Japan in return for shuttle transportation services.

After adopted on 2 March 2006 construction plan of the station, the CAM was no longer among the to be carried into space modules. This was due to the fact that the space shuttle fleet was put out of service after 2011 and therefore could only complete a limited number of flights. Thus, only the most important American modules and the modules of international partners were brought to the station.

Currently, the CAM is shown in an outdoor exhibition of the Tsukuba Space Center in Japan.
