Many noblemen and bishops who had already witnessed deeds of his predecessor Burgred, also signed Ceolwulfs documents, making its recognition in Mercia was underpinned.

In the autumn of 877, the Danes fell in Mercia and took a share of the crop, the other part they left Ceolwulf.

Ceolwulf seems to have attacked Wales. Rhodri the Great and his son were in any case Gwriad 878 killed in battles against the Mercier, and Ceolwulf was probably the commander of the Mercians. Anarawd ap Rhodri defeated the Mercier at Conway in North Wales in the year 881, this was referred to as "God's vengeance for Rhodri ". Ceolwulf may have been killed in this battle, at least there is no more to it later sources. At least 883 he had already died for sure.
