Cephalophyllum

Cephalophyllum framesii

Cephalophyllum is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The botanical name is derived from the Greek words for head and Cephalotes for phyllo sheet.

Description

The species of the genus Cephalophyllum grow compact, are crawling and rarely erect. They make pillows. Your almost free, light to dark green leaves are triangular, fusiform, keel or lobar. The keel is often wrong and the sides very different. Their epidermal cells are more or less flat. In these crystal sand is present. The horizontal wax platelets form a thick, continuous layer. The stomata are barely sunk.

The flowers appear in fairly large groups. The five or six sepals are similar. Their petals can be white, yellow, pink to purple, red, or orange kupferfarbem. Filamentous staminodes are present in one species.

The five-to sechsfächrigen, funnel-shaped at its base or convex capsule fruit remain on the plant. The closure body are large, the wing flaps wide. The fruits contain brown, pear-shaped seeds, which are 0.75 to 0.85 mm long and 0.55 to 0.65 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus is widespread Cephalophyllum in the center of South Africa's Western Cape province. The species grow in rock crevices or schistose varieties with an annual rainfall of 100 to 200 mm, which falls mainly in March and November.

The first description of the genus by Nicholas Edward Brown was published in 1928. The type species is Cephalophyllum tricolorum. The genus includes two subgenera Cephalophyllum with the following types:
