Cercle et Carré

" Cercle et Carré " (Eng.: circle and square ) was founded in Paris in 1929, cosmopolitan artistic association that was only a year, but organized a significant exhibition. Founders were the artist, poet and art critic Michel Seuphor and the painter Joaquín Torres García. , Who had decided in response to the ubiquity of Surrealism, artists unite constructivist tendency.

Cercle et Carré promoted the new developments and research in the field of abstract art. During its short existence, the group issued three editions of the art magazine of the same name.

The only organized by Seuphor exhibition of the group took place in April 1930 in the "Gallery 23" in Paris, Rue La Boétie instead. The logo and the exhibition poster designed Pierre Daura. Overall, part of name 46 artists. On the day of the vernissage Michel Seuphor recited poems, where he hid his face behind a mask of German sculptor Cueto. Luigi Russolo was playing on one of the instruments he developed, called Russolophe. The exhibition is considered the first international group exhibition of Abstract Art.

The grouping whose magazine came neither in public nor in the criticism on interest and their issue had little attention, broke up already for the summer of 1930 again. Reasons for this were the differences of opinion existing between Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg - the van Doesburg led, together with Jean Hélion the revue "Art concret " (1930 ) surrendered - especially at the initiative of Vantongerloo in the absence of the diseased Seuphors on 15 February. was 1931 founding of the new Paris group " Abstraction- Création ". This took most of the members of the group " Cercle et Carré " and the previously developed ideas and realized them with increasing success and influence until its dissolution in 1937.
