Cerrillos, Salta

Cerrillos is the capital of the departments Cerrillos in Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It lies in the center of the Valle de Lerma, and is therefore called the geographical heart of the valley. The distance to the provincial capital of Salta is 15 kilometers. Within the province of Salta, it has a strategic position because it frees the obligatory access to the Valle de Lerma and the Calchaquíes. In the classification of municipalities in the province it belongs with 17,634 inhabitants to the communities of the first category. Terms of area, it is, however, at 224 km ², the smallest municipality.

About the Ruta Nacional 68 Cerrillos is connected with the wine and excursion Cafayate. Through the town and the railway line leads Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano, the famous tren a las nubes.

Climate

The climate is subtropical with dry season.

History

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the zone of Pulares, Guachipas, Chicoanas and Quilmes was inhabited.

During the War of Independence against Spain an important contract between the independence fighters Martín Miguel de Güemes and General José Rondeau was signed in Cerrillos.

The city was founded in 1822.

Economy

Main crops in agriculture are tobacco, sugar cane and corn.

Cerrillos is known for its carnival.
