Cervelliere

A brain hood (including iron hood, Italian Cervelliera or Segretta in testa) is a snug, the skull and forehead protective iron cap that came up in the early 13th century.

Description

It was typically worn in conjunction with the existing ring of steel braid aventail under a great helm. In the 14th century the brain was displaced hood of the products resulting from their Bascinet, but found in slightly modified form among the soldiers of the early 16th century re- distribution.

In the 16th century brain hoods ( Hirnhäubel ) were often bought as discreet protection under the then fashionable feather beret and big hats. Some versions were also provided with driven from the solid material spines. The number of spikes was five to seven. This served to keep a worn over hat in shape. The brain hood is often confused with the pelvic or Coif. It was often used by cavalry or mercenaries who wore big flashy felt and leather hats.
