Cesar Chavez

César Estrada Chávez ( born March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona, † April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona) was the founder of U.S. agricultural workers' union United Farm Workers ( UFW ).

Life

Chavez was born in 1927 as the second of five children of a peasant family in Yuma. To pay for the tax debt, the family sold the farm in 1939 and joined migrant workers in order to earn in Arizona and California 's livelihood. In 1944 he went to the United States Marine Corps. In 1948 he returned to California and married Helen Fabela.

From 1952, he sat down in the Community Service Organization ( CSO) for Social, where he was supported by Fred Ross. In 1962 Chávez left the CSO to establish the Agricultural Workers' Union National Farm Workers Association ( NFWA ) with Dolores Huerta. In 1965, the NFWA and the Agricultural Workers Organization Committee ( AWOC ) merged to form the union of the United Farm Workers.

His birthday, March 31, in several U.S. states, public holiday ( Cesar Chavez Day).
