Canadian Forces Base Greenwood (IATA: YZX, ICAO: CYZX ) is an airbase of the Royal Canadian Air Force and is located near the small towns of Greenwood and Kingston, Nova Scotia. The base is one of two in Canada, where the CP -140 Aurora and CP - 140A Arcturus anti-submarine/maritime patrol aircraft are stationed. The stationed on the base unit is the 14th Wing ( 14 Squadron ).

History

The airfield was completed in 1940-1942. Over time, various aircraft types and squadrons were stationed at the airfield. Lockheed Hudson MK III, Avro Anson and the Westland Lysander. All the aircraft were members of the British Royal Air Force. End of 1942, 36 aircraft and 194 trainees from a total of 1474 people were on the base. By November 1942, the number of trainees has doubled and the number of machines stationed increased to 80

As part of the program BCATP the airfield served as a base for maritime patrol. From there started airplanes, watching the submarine activities in the western Atlantic. On 1 July 1944, the Air Base to the RCAF, the Canadian Royal Canadian Air Force, passed. Under the new leadership the BCTAP program was continued. The program ran until 31 March 1945.

Presence

The base is the largest of the Canadian Air Force on the Atlantic coast, the number of deployed aircraft and personnel. The following types of aircraft are permanently stationed at the airfield:

Together with CFB Gander, CFB Goose Bay and CFB Bagotville Air Base is used as a rotation airfield, will be stationed on the alternating squadron units with CF -188 fighter aircraft. This has been introduced since the attacks of September 11, as part of the NORAD air space surveillance to better monitor the eastern airspace of the North American continent can.
