Chalk Hill AVA

The Chalk Hill AVA ( recognized since 21 October 1983) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of California. The area is located in the administrative area of ​​Sonoma County and overlaps the northernmost part of the Russian River Valley AVA. The name of Chalk Hill refers to the chalk-white ground, consisting of volcanic ash. The white grape varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc thrive on these soils very well. The largest share of the vineyards of the Chalk Hill AVA lie on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.
