Chamilo

Chamilo is ( License released under the GNU / GPL ) learning platform, often abbreviated as LMS an open-source. Based on PHP and a database backend supported the installation is platform-independent possible. Chamilo are currently available in 2 versions: Version 1.9.x is the logical development of Dokeos, while version 3.x is treading a completely new approach of e-learning. The project is supported by the Chamilo Association, which on the one hand, the public relations of Chamilo cares, and secondly, the maintenance of quality standards through certification of official service providers.

History

Chamilo was officially forked on 18 January 2010 by a large part of the then existing community of Dokeos. The roots go back to 2000, however, the start of Claroline, which was forked in 2004 also ( to Dokeos ). The decision to use a fork was the ever- drift development of free software philosophy. More than 500 active developers and users were on the Switch Dokeos 1.8.6.1 to Chamilo 1.8.6.2 here.

Community

Meanwhile, more and more members of the Dokeos community have taken the plunge to Chamilo. Since Chamilo is still relatively young, some installations have been indeed already been noted, a really large number ( such as is recorded in Wordpress or Typo3), however, is not yet known. For Germany, the community is estimated to be about 500 people (as of December 2012).

Chamilo Association

Since June 2010 the Chamilo Association is an officially registered association is non-profit organization under Belgian law. This was the logical step for the community to prevent a renewed drift. The right and the future directions to / from Chamilo is therefore not in the hands of one individual, but is determined by a group of elected members. The founding members (comprising of 7 members ) sitting simultaneously on the Board of Directors, came from the private sector and e-learning in public administrations.

Technical details

Chamilo is developed in PHP, and runs on LAMP or WAMP preferred systems. However, only a modern web browser is required on the user side ( this definition: version not older than three years). For some functions, the Flash plugin is required but is not absolutely necessary for the essential use.

Modules

Thanks to its modularized development Chamilo can be extended anytime. For example, there a PowerPoint -to- Converter learning path or connection to a video conference system. However, this set sound administrative knowledge on the target system.

Worldwide distribution

  • The focus was placed on the spread in Asian countries in 2010; through their translation into Chinese and Japanese was a significant increase in active installations recorded.
  • The year 2011 was marked by the Middle East; but not as many active portals were recorded by the translation into Arabic, as was the case in the Asian region.
  • Currently the main focus is on improving adaptation to the needs himself from universities and administrations; especially in Europe and Latin America could be registered many new installations.
  • Chamilo is accompanied by professional service providers who provide quality service thanks to the certification by the Association.
  • Chamilo is currently also in Spanish and Peruvian ministries in use.
