Sharable Content Object Reference Model

The SCORM ( Sharable Content Object Reference Model ) is a reference model for interchangeable electronic learning contents of the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. SCORM includes a (variable ) collection of standards and specifications from a variety of sources to allow easy replacement, general access and reusability in different learning environments web-based content ( e-learning).

Components

SCORM 2004 consists of four main documents that are available in English since the SCORM Version: Overview, Content Aggregation Model, Run - Time Environment and Sequencing and Navigation. Authoring tools and learning platforms currently support, however, usually only the previous version of SCORM 1.2, in particular the aspect of the Sequencing and Navigation is not yet included.

Overview

In summary document the history and vision of SCORM is described as well as an introduction to the following three components and their interrelationships.

Content Aggregation Model ( CAM)

The CAM describes the resources that can be used in learning packages, as well as the possibilities for grouping and structuring of resources to learning redistributable packages. When resources, especially files of most different formats or URLs can be used. These are organized into hierarchies, which are referred to as Organizations. In addition, metadata can be specified to enable use of verbal descriptions, keywords and the like, a targeted search for learning content to such a structured learning package. The overall package is defined by a so-called manifest file in XML format.

Run - Time Environment (RTE)

By RTE the period-related behavior of a Learning Management System ( LMS), the interface from the LMS to the level specified in CAM learning packages and the use of user data are described at runtime. Thus, about user preferences stored, captured learning progress and learning goals are defined.

The three components are:

  • Launch
  • Application Programming Interface ( API)
  • Data Model

Sequencing and Navigation (SN )

By SN specification describes how the order of presentation of learning content through the navigation of the user can be varied. For this purpose so-called activity trees are described that define the possible orders in response to user actions.
