Karakter film is a drama about a destructive father -son relationship by Mike van Diem from the year 1997. The film is based on the eponymous novel by the Dutch author Ferdinand Bordewijk of 1938.

Action

In Rotterdam at the beginning of the 20th century, a young man trying to emancipate themselves from its largely foreign to him father. This had impregnated his housekeeper, but had been rejected by her when he offered to marry her. From the explosive mixture of pride, guilt and hurt feelings of the opulent produced film develops a tragic father - son story.

Production

The majority of the exterior shots took place in Poland and the Speicherstadt in Hamburg in Breslau.
