Charles Bryant (actor)

Charles Bryant ( born January 8, 1879 in Hartford, Cheshire, United Kingdom, † August 7, 1948 in Mount Kisco, New York, United States) was a British silent film actor, director and screenwriter. He became famous for his fictitious marriage with the famous actress Alla Nazimova.

Life and work

Bryant was born in 1879 and began with eight years with the theater games. After he had left the Ardingly College at fourteen to become a professional actor, he came in 1897 in the United States, where he began his career on Broadway. There he acted in plays of Henrik Ibsen and Edith Wharton, Actor was directed by David Belasco and - after the end of his film career - he himself was director of plays on Broadway. On Broadway, were the most famous actors with whom he turned, his wife Alla Nazimova and Lionel Atwill. He also wrote three screenplays and resulted in a total of four films directed.

His film career began in 1914 and ended after the defeat of Salome in 1923. During those six years, he was about 17 times before the camera and led three times to direct myself, especially when failure Salome. Some times he stood with his wife in front of the camera.

After the end of the film career he again went to Broadway, where he worked as actor and director with 69 years until his death in 1948.

Sham marriage with Alla Nazimova

During his work on Broadway, he met his future wife, at that time know very well-known and eccentric actress Alla Nazimova. Both were married in 1912, the marriage was divorced in 1920. Bryant was - as we now know - gay and bisexual Nazimova. Both were married to represent a middle class life in homophobic Hollywood of those years outside. The marriage was never consummated, and Bryant and Nazimova often not lived in an apartment together.
