Charles Caccia

Charles L. Caccia ( born April 28, 1930 in Milan, Italy, † May 3, 2008 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada.

From 1968 to 2004 Caccia was a member of the House of Commons for the electoral district of Davenport in Ontario. At the University of Toronto, he was a professor of forestry.

Under the Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, he was on 22 September 1981 to August 11, 1983 Minister of Labour in the Canadian Cabinet and from 12 August 1983 to June 29, 1984 Canadian Environment Minister. This office he led under Prime Minister John Turner June 30, 1984 to September 16, 1984 continued.

He was also repeatedly parliamentary secretary, among other things, the Advocate General of Canada, the President of the Treasury Board and the Minister of Labour and Immigration. Caccia also chaired the Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. From 2002 to 2004 Caccia Dean of the House was the Canadian House of Commons.

Caccia was considered a leftist deputy who was involved in environmental issues and the 2003 Iraq war criticized.

When choosing the party leader of the Liberals in 2003 Caccia supported as one of the few that also left-liberal candidate Sheila Copps against the right-wing liberal Paul Martin. This won the election and was elected as the Prime Minister of Canada in 2004. In the parliamentary elections of 2004 Paul Martin supported in the constituency Davenport former councilor Mario Silva for the Liberal Party. Caccia pulled thereupon withdrew his candidacy and also decided against a candidacy as an Independent.
