Charles de Valois, duc de Berry

Charles de Valois ( German and Charles of Valois, born December 28, 1446 La Riche, † May 12 1472 in Bordeaux) was the youngest son of King Charles VII of France and the sole surviving brother of his successor Louis XI ..

After his father's death in 1461, his brother Louis XI endowed him. with one of appanage. He was given the Duchy of Berry, which made him a peer of France. Since Charles was dissatisfied with this share of the inheritance, he joined the rebellion of Charles of Charolais and the League for the common good ( Ligue du Bien public). 1465 joined the king with the insurgents the Peace of Conflans and allowed Charles Berry in this regard against the Duchy of Normandy replaced.

Charles turned out to consolidate control of the Duchy of Normandy as incompetent and came into conflict with his former allies, Francis II of Brittany. Louis XI. could then occupy the royal troops of Normandy, Charles fled to the court of Francis II, with whom he was reconciled again. He remained in exile until 1468, when Franz II with Louis XI. closed in Ancenis peace.

In the Peace of Peronne between Louis XI. and Charles of Charolais (now Duke of Burgundy ) received the 1468 Charles Champagne and Brie. In 1469 he exchanged these possessions as well as his claims to Normandy against the Duchy of Guyenne.

Charles died in 1472 in Bordeaux a poison attack. He was buried there in the cathedral Saint -André. He was unmarried and left no legitimate heirs. His lands fell to his death after the royal domain.
