Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers

Carlo II Gonzaga (* 1609, † August 30 1631 in Cavriana ) was the son of the Duke Carlo I. Gonzaga Nevers and Rethel. He was Duke of Mayenne and d' Aiguillon, the Marquis de Villars, Comte du Maine and the Comte de Tende.

Carlo married on December 25, 1627 Maria Gonzaga (* July 29, 1609; † August 14, 1660 ), daughter of the Duke Francesco IV Gonzaga of Mantua and Erbnichte his successor Vincenzo II Gonzaga, who died later on the wedding day, so that the planned scheme is in direct effect.

Vincenzo II Gonzaga wanted to make sure with this marriage the succession in the Duchy of Mantua, which he succeeded in the result after the Mantuan War of Succession between Emperor Ferdinand II and France, it was decided by the Treaty of Cherasco in his senses due to the development in the Thirty Years' War in 1631.

Duke of Mantua was not Carlo II, but his father Carlo I. Gonzaga. Carlo II held the Sekundogenitur in the Duchy of Rethel, and died before his father, so that the succession in Mantua, Nevers and Rethel in 1637 went directly over to his son.
