Charles I, Count of Nevers

Charles of Burgundy or Charles I of Nevers from the House of Valois - Burgundy (* 1414 in Clamecy, † May 25, 1464 ) was 1415-1464, Count of Nevers and Rethel. He was the son of Philip II of Nevers and Bonne d' Artois.

After his father's death at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, he became the successor of his father as Count of Nevers and Rethel. At first he was under the guardianship of his mother, then by Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy. As soon as he came of age, he approached to the King of France, which was in contrast to the dukes of Valois - Burgundy. On the side of the king, he participated in campaigns in Normandy (1449-1450) and Guyenne (1451-1453) part.

He married on June 11, 1456 Marie d' Albret († 1486 ), daughter of Charles II d' Albret and Anne d' Armagnac. This marriage remained childless.

From a relationship with Jolanda Logon sprang from an illegitimate daughter, whom he legitimized in 1463:

  • Adrienne of Nevers; ∞ Claude de Rochefort, ∞ later on May 10, 1466 Jacques de Cluny († 1512).

Since Adrienne remained childless and Karl left no heir, succeeded him as Count of Nevers and Rethel a younger brother, John of Clamency as John II, Count of Nevers and Rethel.
