Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal

Charles I of Hesse- Philippsthal (* September 23 1682 in Schmalkalden, † 8 May 1770 in Philippstal ) was Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal out of the house of Hesse.

Life

Karl was the eldest son of the Landgrave Philip of Hesse - Philippsthal from his marriage to Katharina Amalie (1654-1736), daughter of Count Karl Otto of Solms - Laubach. He succeeded his father in 1721 as Landgrave of Hesse -Philipp Thal, a small Paragium within the Hesse- Kassel.

Karl went in 1701 in Danish service and fought in the Spanish War of Succession. On March 10, 1710, he distinguished himself at the Battle of Helsingborg and became a Major-General raised. In 1715 he was involved in the landing of Pomerania and the siege of Stralsund. He then joined the French service, where he was appointed on March 13, 1721 to Lieutenant General.

On June 6, 1731, he was awarded the Danish Elephant Order. During the Seven Years' War he temporarily assumed in his house in Lübeck Schildstraße 10 refuge.

He later entered the imperial military service, where he rose to become Field Marshal Lieutenant.

Progeny

Karl married on November 24, 1725 in Eisenach Katharine Christine ( 1699-1743 ), daughter of Duke Johann Wilhelm of Saxe- Eisenach, with whom he had the following children:
