Charles II, Duke of Münsterberg-Oels

Charles II of Münsterberg, also Charles II of Podiebrad, Charles II of oil which Czech Karel II z Minsterberka, ( born April 15, 1545 oil; † January 28, 1617 ibid ) was 1565-1617 Duke of Oels and 1604-1617 Duke of Bernstadt. He also led the title of duke of Münsterberg and the title of Count of Glatz. 1608-1617 he was under the emperors Rudolf and Matthias Upper Governor of Silesia.

Life

Charles II came to the cathedral Berger family branch of the Bohemian noble family Podiebrad. His parents were Henry II of Münsterberg and Oels (1507-1548) and Margaret (1515-1559), daughter of Duke Henry V of Mecklenburg -Schwerin.

1561 Charles II went with his tutor and his tutor to study in Vienna, where he lived at the court of Emperor Ferdinand I.. After his death in 1565 he was among six more years to the court of Emperor Maximilian II, whom he accompanied to all diets as well as to Hungary and on other trips.

After the death of his uncle John of Podiebrad 1565 Charles inherited the Principality of oil. On September 17, 1570 he married in Moravskotřebova with Catherine Berka of Dube ( 1553-1583 ). By this marriage he came to the rule Sternberg in North Moravia, which remained until 1647 in his offspring. After Catherine's death in 1583 Charles married on September 30, 1585 Elisabeth Magdalena ( 1562-1630 ), daughter of Duke Georg II Brieger

After the death of Kunstädter Jiřík Zajímač transferred in 1587 his sister Catherine, who was married to Hynek Pirnitz of Wallenstein ( Hynek Brtnický z Valdštejna ), the rule Jaispitz in Southern Moravia Charles II, as only the Munster Berger line of the Lords of Podiebrad and Kunstadt existed. 1588 Karl exchanged the Moravian rule Saar, who also was in his possession relating to the Olomouc Bishop Stanislaus Pavlovský of Pavlovitz against smaller possessions near Sternberg.

Karl was a follower of the evangelical teaching which he promoted in his Moravian gentry. In Trebnitzgrund he could with his sovereign influence enforce a Protestant congregation, though the abbess of the convent Trebnitzgrund fought vehemently against and as has also been supported by the Wrocław bishop by the Emperor. 1602 took over the guardianship of his nephew Karl Johann Christian von Brieg and Georg Rudolf of Liegnitz, who were brought up at his court in oil. In 1604 he became the Duke of Bernstadt back, which his brother Henry III. Was sold in 1574.

After the death of the Breslau Bishop John VI. of Sich in 1608 was appointed Governor of Upper Silesia Charles II by the Emperor.

In his capital Oels Karl completed the begun by his uncle Johann palace. 1594, he founded the " illustrious high school " as well as a library that served the teaching staff and the students, but also the Oelser citizens was available. She was housed in a room of the castle church and, after the collapse of the church in 1905 to a new location in the cultivation of the porch. After the Second World War and the associated transition to Poland this room was not available, and the library was initially thought to be lost.
