Charles-Omer Valois

Charles- Omer Valois ( born April 24, 1924 in Montréal, † August 4, 2013 in Saint- Jérôme ) was Bishop of Saint- Jérôme.

Life

Charles Valois studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary of Sainte -Thérèse and Montreal. He received on 3 June 1950, the priesthood by Cardinal Paul -Émile Léger, Archbishop of Montréal. He was from 1950 to 1962 professor at the Seminary of Sainte-Therese in Sainte -Thérèse, interrupted by the study of history from 1955 to 1957 at the University of Montreal. In 1963 he finished there is also a study of French literature. He was also chaplain to 1964 Jeunesse coed chrétienne. He was Vice rain, later rector of the seminary in 1968. He was involved in educational reform in Quebec, especially from 1968 to 1973 as founding rector of the Collège Lionel - Groulx. In 1973 he took over the parish of Sainte- Adèle in Saint- Jérôme; two years later he became Vicar General of the Diocese of Saint- Jérôme and responsible for the pastoral care service. In 1977, he was following the transfer of Bishop Bernard Hubert diocesan administrator.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 10 June 1977 Bishop of Saint- Jérôme. The Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Canada, Angelo Palmas, ordained him on June 29th of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Bernard Hubert, Bishop of Saint -Jean -de -Québec and Robert Lebel, Bishop of Valleyfield.

He was a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops ( CCCB ) and a member of its Standing Committee and other Committees for the Clergy as well as justice and peace, and social communication in the French-speaking diocesan areas. He was a member of the Commission de la vidéo religieuse.

On 22 January 1997 to his retirement request was granted on health grounds by Pope John Paul II.

Charles of Valois was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Canada -Montreal of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
