Charles Rogers (New York)

Charles Rogers ( born April 30, 1800, Northumberland, New York, † January 13, 1874 in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls ), New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1843 and 1845 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Rogers was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Northumberland in Saratoga County and grew up there. He attended Granville Academy and graduated in 1818 from Union College in Schenectady. Rogers studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he did not practice, however, extensively. He sat in the years 1833 and 1837 in the New York State Assembly. His candidacy for the Senate from New York was unsuccessful. Politically he belonged at that time to the Whig party.

In the congressional elections of 1842 for the 28th Congress, he was in the 14th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry Bell Van Rensselaer on March 4, 1843. Since he gave up for reelection in 1844, he retired after the March 3, 1845 out of the Congress. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State.

After his conference time he retired from public life. He joined the Republican Party. On January 13, 1874, he died in Sandy Hill in Washington County and was buried there near to the Union Cemetery.
